The Cordillera de los Frailes is a mountain range in the central part of the Bolivian Andes mountains. It's a cool place with different types of rocks and some tall peaks!

Where is the Cordillera de los Frailes?

The Cordillera de los Frailes is located in the north-eastern part of the Potosí Department in Bolivia. It also borders the north-western Chuquisaca Department.

This mountain range has two main parts:

  • The western part is a volcanic area. It has flat layers of rock formed from ancient volcanic eruptions. These rocks are quite old, from about 5 to 23 million years ago!
  • The eastern part is called the Maragua Syncline. This section is even older. It's made of sedimentary rocks that formed between 66 and 145 million years ago. These rocks were pushed up to create mountains.

The Cordillera de los Frailes stretches from Poopó Lake in the northwest. It goes between a line connecting Challapata, Macha, and Ravelo in the north. In the south, it reaches from Río Mulato to Potosí and Betanzos.

Tallest Mountains

The Cordillera de los Frailes doesn't have as many super-high mountains as some other ranges nearby, like the Cordillera de Lípez to the south.

The two highest mountains in this area are:

These tall peaks are found in the southwestern part of the region.

Rivers and Water

Because these mountains are far from the ocean, they don't have many huge rivers. However, one important river starts here.

The main river in the Cordillera de los Frailes is the Pillkumayu. This river flows through the area from the northwest to the southeast.
