A Look at Cordova's Past
Cordova has some interesting history. Just north of the town, a church called St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church was started on a farm way back in 1765.
Tapper's Corner Road, which runs east of town, leads to Lewistown Road. Near there, a creek flows into the Tuckahoe. This creek was once called Kentucky. It's believed that Frederick Douglass, a very important historical figure, was born in a cabin near this spot. His grandmother, Betsey Bailey, lived there.
Cordova used to have a gas station on its main road for many years. You can still see parts of it today. Many homes in the center of the village were built from kits ordered from Sears. The wood for these homes was brought to Cordova by train in the 1920s and 1930s.
At one time, Cordova also had a doctor's office and a general store, which are now private homes. The town also had a cannery, where food was preserved, and a chicken processing plant.
Community Fair and Weather
Since 1962, the Cordova Volunteer Fireman’s Association has hosted a popular country fair. This fair lasts for three nights and starts on the first Thursday of August. It's held on the grounds behind the firehouse.
On May 18, 1995, a strong F2 tornado hit the town. It caused a path of damage about 10 miles long and resulted in over $1 million in damage.
