Corey Mace started his college football journey at Palomar College. Later, he moved to the University of Wyoming to continue playing.
Professional Playing Career
Corey Mace was chosen by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the second round of the 2007 CFL Draft. However, he signed with the NFL's Buffalo Bills before the draft day.
Time with the Buffalo Bills
Mace joined the Buffalo Bills in 2007 as a player who wasn't drafted but signed freely. He played for two seasons with the team. In 2008, he appeared in three games and made one tackle.
He later rejoined the Bills on July 31, 2009. He played in two more games, making one tackle and one interception.
Playing for the Calgary Stampeders
Corey Mace's rights in the CFL were traded to the Calgary Stampeders on August 22, 2010. He then signed a contract to play for the Stampeders for the rest of the 2010 CFL season. Even though he was drafted by the Blue Bombers and played for the Bills, this was his first time playing in the CFL.
In 2010, Mace played in eight games for the Stampeders. He even recovered a fumble and ran it 60 yards for a touchdown in a game against Saskatchewan.
During the 2011 CFL season, Mace unfortunately got a serious injury to his Achilles tendon. This meant he had to miss the rest of that season.
Mace played a much bigger role in the 2012 CFL season. He started in all 21 regular-season and playoff games. He made 25 tackles, forced two fumbles, and had one sack. He even caught a one-yard touchdown pass in a game. After this successful season, he signed a new contract in December 2012.
In the 2013 CFL season, Mace suffered another injury, a torn shoulder. This required surgery and made him miss the entire season.
Mace started 12 games during the 2014 CFL season, even though he missed six games due to injuries. He made 11 tackles and had a sack. He also recovered a fumble that led to a touchdown. He played in both of the Stampeders' playoff games. He helped his team win the 102nd Grey Cup, which is the championship game of the CFL.
After the 2014 season, Mace signed a new contract with the Stampeders. He also received the Presidents' Ring Award. This award is given for great performance on and off the field. Corey Mace was known for helping his community. He started a holiday food drive for food banks. He also created "Mace's Faces," a program that allowed 15 young people to attend every home game.
Sadly, Mace did not play any games in 2015 because he broke his foot before the season started. After the 2015 season, Corey Mace decided to retire from playing professional football. In his CFL career, he played in 40 regular-season games and 6 playoff games. He made 44 tackles and had 4 sacks.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Corey Mace began his coaching career.
Coaching for the Calgary Stampeders
On December 10, 2015, Mace became the Calgary Stampeders' defensive line coach. He replaced his former teammate and coach, Devone Claybrooks. Mace won his first Grey Cup as a coach when the Stampeders won the 106th Grey Cup in 2018. He coached the defensive line for the Stampeders from 2016 to 2021.
Coaching for the Toronto Argonauts
On January 6, 2022, Mace joined the Toronto Argonauts as their defensive coordinator. In his first year in this role, he helped the team win the 109th Grey Cup championship. He stayed with the Argonauts for the 2023 season.
Coaching for the Saskatchewan Roughriders
On November 29, 2023, it was announced that Corey Mace would be the new head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Roughriders officially introduced him as their 48th head coach on November 30, 2023. In his first season as head coach, he led the team to a 9–8–1 record. This allowed them to host a playoff game after two years without making the playoffs. However, they lost to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the West Final.
