Cornish Creek was a small rural area in Queensland, Australia. It was located in the Barcaldine Region. In 2016, only 16 people lived there.
On 22 November 2019, the Queensland Government changed how localities were set up in the Barcaldine Region. Cornish Creek was then joined with other areas. Most of Cornish Creek became part of Muttaburra, and a small part joined Aramac.
Where is Cornish Creek?
The Thomson River forms the border on the south-west side of Cornish Creek. The creek itself, also called Cornish Creek, flows through the area. It starts in Upper Cornish Creek and flows west towards Tablederry. There, it joins the Thomson River. All the water in this area eventually flows into the huge Lake Eyre drainage basin.
Roads like Muttaburra Aramac Road and Crossmoor Road pass through the area. The main activity here is raising animals like cattle and sheep.
A Look at the Past
Cornish Creek is on the traditional land of the Iningai people. The Iningai are an Aboriginal group. They speak the Iningai language. Their traditional lands include areas around Longreach, Barcaldine, Muttaburra, and Aramac.
The area is named after the creek. In 1860, an explorer named William Landsborough named the creek after his business partner, Edward Cornish.
