History of Cottonwood
Long ago, settlers came to this area. They found a group of cottonwood trees near the Verde River. This spot became a popular meeting place. Travelers would rest their horses here. They would also set up camp before continuing their journeys.
This special spot grew into the center of Cottonwood. A post office opened in 1885. In 1908, Main Street was created. Two settlers used a mule team to clear the land for the street.
A nearby mining town called Clemenceau was started in 1917. It is now part of Cottonwood. The mine's smelter closed in 1936. This caused many people to lose their jobs. Cottonwood officially became a city in 1960.
