Couchsachraga Peak is a mountain found in Essex County, New York. Its name, "Couchsachraga," comes from an old Algonquin or Huron word. It means "dismal wilderness," which sounds a bit spooky! This mountain is part of the Santanoni Mountains, which are inside the bigger Adirondacks. Couchsachraga Peak sits next to Panther Peak on its eastern side. There isn't a clear path to the top, and because it's covered in trees, you won't find any wide-open views from the summit.

About Couchsachraga Peak

Couchsachraga Peak is a mountain in the Adirondacks of New York. It is known for being one of the Adirondack High Peaks, even though it's a bit shorter than some others. The mountain is covered in thick forests, so there are no open views from its top.

Where the Water Flows

Couchsachraga Peak is part of a watershed. A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into one main river or lake. For Couchsachraga, the water flows into the Cold River.

This Cold River then joins the Raquette River. Eventually, all this water makes its way to the Saint Lawrence River in Canada. From there, it flows into the huge Gulf of Saint Lawrence.

  • Water from the south side of Couchsachraga goes into Calahan Brook.
  • This brook then flows into Moose Creek.
  • Finally, Moose Creek joins the Cold River.
  • Water from the northeast and north sides of the mountain also flows into the Cold River through several smaller brooks.

The High Peaks List

Back in 1897, people surveyed the Adirondacks. They thought Couchsachraga Peak was over 4,000 feet tall. Because of this, it was added to the list of the 46 Adirondack High Peaks. These are the tallest mountains in the area.

However, a new survey in 1953 by the USGS found something different. They discovered that Couchsachraga Peak, along with three other mountains, was actually a bit shorter than 4,000 feet. Even though the height changed, the list of the 46 High Peaks was not updated. So, Couchsachraga Peak is still considered one of them!

Couchsachraga Peak is located inside Adirondack Park. This is a very large protected area in New York.
