A Look at Covarachía's History

Long ago, during a time called the Herrera Period, native people lived in the area where Covarachía is now. Later, this region became part of the Muisca Confederation. This was a group of indigenous communities ruled by a leader called a cacique.

The Chicamocha River flows near Covarachía. The lands to the east of the town were home to the Lache people. The Muisca were another important group. They lived on a high plateau called the Altiplano Cundiboyacense before the Spanish arrived in the 1530s.

The modern town of Covarachía was officially started on February 10, 1823. It was founded by two people named Juan Zámano and Felipe Pérez. For a short time, between 1858 and 1869, the town was known by a different name: Ricaurte.
