How Coventry Got Its Name

The town of Coventry was named after Coventry, Connecticut. This was the birthplace of Major Elias Buel, one of the town's founders.

Coventry During the Civil War

In 1860, a local "Artillery Company" had a drill. They had a six-pound brass cannon. In 1861, some soldiers from Coventry joined the 3rd Vermont Infantry Regiment. They fought in the American Civil War.

The Famous Phish Concert

In 2004, a huge music concert was held in Coventry. It was the last concert for the band Phish. The event took place on August 14–15.

About 65,000 people came to the concert. This made Coventry the biggest "city" in Vermont for those two days! Even Burlington, a much larger city, had fewer people.

The concert was near the airport, between Coventry and Newport. Heavy rains turned the parking areas into thick mud. Many cars got stuck. Some fans even left their cars on the highway and walked to the show. People lost their shoes in the mud! Tractors had to help pull cars out after the concert.
