The area near Craigmaroinn has a long history. It was first mentioned in old records because of a special old road called the Causey Mounth. This road was built on high ground. It was the only way to travel from places south of Stonehaven to Aberdeen along the coast.

The Causey Mounth was a very important route. It connected the crossing point of the River Dee (where the Bridge of Dee is today) to the south. The road passed through areas like Portlethen Moss, Muchalls Castle, and Stonehaven.
A Famous Journey
In 1639, a large army used this old road. William Keith, 7th Earl Marischal and the Marquess of Montrose led this army. They were part of the Covenanter movement. Their army had 9,000 men. They marched along the Causey Mounth during a time of conflict known as the Civil War.
