Discovering Creston's Past
Creston began to grow when the Central Washington Railroad arrived in 1889. The town got its name because it was thought to be at the highest point, or "crest," along the railroad line between Cheney and Coulee City, Washington.
In the spring of 1890, a plan for the town was officially drawn up. The very first building in Creston was a small store. It was moved there from a nearby village called Sherman. A post office was soon opened, and Henry Verfurth became the first postmaster.
Growth and Challenges in Early Creston
After an economic downturn in 1893, Creston's growth slowed down. But things changed in 1897. A very good wheat harvest helped the local economy. This brought many new people to the area.
Soon, new businesses, grain storage buildings, and churches appeared. The town also got its first bank and newspaper. A new road and ferry helped connect Creston to valuable mining areas. Between 1900 and 1903, Creston's population doubled. The town officially became a city on April 20, 1903.
In August 1902, a famous outlaw named Harry Tracy was found at a ranch near Creston. He was involved in a shootout there.
