The crimson-breasted woodpecker is a medium-sized bird. It has a striking look with bright colors. Its back and wings are mostly black. You might see some white spots and stripes on its wings. There's also a bigger white patch on its wings.

What Does It Look Like?

The tail of this woodpecker is black on top. It has white stripes on the outer feathers. Underneath, the tail is also striped in black and white.

Its chin and throat are white. The middle of its chest is a bright red color, which is how it gets its name! The rest of its belly is white or a light brown color. It has black streaks on its belly. Sometimes, there's also some red or pink near its bottom.

The forehead of the crimson-breasted woodpecker is white. Its head is black on top. If you see a male woodpecker, it will have a special red patch on the back of its neck. A black stripe runs from its cheek area to its neck. This stripe then continues down the sides of its chest.

Where Do They Live?

These woodpeckers live in specific types of forests. They enjoy subtropical and tropical forests. This means they like places that are warm and often rainy. They can be found in forests that are low to the ground. They also live in forests higher up on mountains.

Scientists have found that there are three slightly different types, or subspecies, of the crimson-breasted woodpecker. Each subspecies lives in a different area.
