Cultural history of the United States facts for kids
This article covers the cultural history of the United States since its founding in the late 18th century. The region has had patterns of original settlement by different peoples. Colonies were created and made into independent U.S.states. Immigration has played a large part in the formation of the culture of the United States. Many ethnic groups brought their culture with them when they immigrated to the U.S. Throughout time, a culture has developed that can be defined as "American." However, there are still regions of the country that have their own culture and dialect of the English language. More recently, the United States has led changes in the rest of the world. These changes include the spread of knowledge, customs, and arts of Americans.
Before European colonization
The Americas before European colonization were home to a variety of societies, economies, and cultures. Historians refer to the people who lived in America before European colonization as Native Americans.
The Columbian exchange, sometimes called the Grand Exchange, began in the late 1400s when Europeans began exploring the Americas and bringing goods and ideas from Europe, Africa, and Asia with them. Among these were concepts of liberty, private property, and labor. Some exchanges were good (plants, animals, ideas) and some were bad (diseases, slave labor).
