Cultural history of the United States facts for kids
The United States has a rich and interesting cultural history. This means we'll look at how people's ways of life, ideas, and art have changed over time since the country started in the late 1700s.
Long ago, different groups of people settled in the land that became the U.S. They created Colonies which later became independent states. Many people also came to the U.S. from other countries through immigration. These ethnic groups brought their own cultures with them.
Over time, a unique "American" culture developed. But even today, different regions of the country have their own special cultures and ways of speaking English. More recently, the United States has also influenced the rest of the world. This includes sharing American knowledge, customs, and arts.
Before European Settlers Arrived
Before Europeans came, the Americas were home to many different Native American groups. These groups had their own ways of life, how they traded goods, and their unique cultures.
The Columbian exchange, sometimes called the Grand Exchange, started in the late 1400s. This is when Europeans began exploring the Americas. They brought goods and ideas from Europe, Africa, and Asia with them. Some of these ideas included liberty (freedom), private property (owning land), and different ways of working.
Some of these exchanges were good, like new plants, animals, and ideas. But some were very bad. For example, Europeans brought diseases that harmed Native Americans, and they also brought the terrible practice of slave labor, forcing people to work without pay.
