Cumberland is a busy area in Cobb County, Georgia, in the Atlanta metropolitan area. It's like a mini-city outside of a big city, often called an "edge city." It's about 10 miles (16 km) northwest of downtown Atlanta. Many people work and live here. You'll see tall, modern buildings (skyscrapers) among the trees. It's also home to Truist Park, where the Atlanta Braves baseball team plays!

Where is Cumberland?

Cumberland is located about 10 miles (16 km) northwest of downtown Atlanta. It's right where two major highways, I-75 and I-285, meet. This meeting point is sometimes called the "Cobb Cloverleaf."

Most of Cumberland is an "unincorporated area." This means it's not officially a city with its own mayor and city council. Instead, it's part of Cobb County. It shares a ZIP code (30339) with the nearby Vinings area.

While there are no exact borders, the main business part of Cumberland stretches along Cobb Parkway. It goes northeast to the Wildwood Office Park and north to Windy Hill Road. To the south and west, it extends along Cumberland Parkway and Paces Ferry Road.

Cumberland's Story

Cumberland has changed a lot in the last 50 years. Before it became a business hub, it was home to Camp Bert Adams, a Boy Scout camp, from 1927 to 1960.

After World War II, the area started to grow. But the biggest changes happened when Cumberland Mall opened in 1973. It was Georgia's largest mall at the time!

About ten years later, the first office building of Cobb Galleria was built. This helped bring more offices, shops, and hotels to the area.

In 1988, local property owners created the Cumberland Community Improvement District (Cumberland CID). This group helps improve the area by raising money for things like roads and other important projects.

In 1994, the Cobb Galleria Centre was built. It's a large convention and exhibit center. In 2006, Cumberland Mall was updated and expanded. Then, in 2007, the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre opened. This beautiful building hosts concerts, plays, and is home to the Atlanta Opera.

Getting Around Cumberland

Most people in Cumberland use cars to get around. There's a network of roads that help traffic flow. Cumberland Boulevard goes around most of the area. Other important roads include Windy Ridge Parkway, Interstate North Parkway, Akers Mill Road, and Circle 75 Parkway.

For public transportation, CobbLinc (Marietta/Cobb County's Transit System) serves the area. There's also one MARTA bus line that connects at the Cumberland/Galleria Transfer station.

You might also spot train tracks nearby. The former Louisville & Nashville (now CSXT) railway line, which runs from Cincinnati to Atlanta, is just west of Truist Park.

Cumberland is a major business center. It has many office buildings, making it the fifth-largest commercial office district in the Atlanta metropolitan area. This means it has more office space than places like downtown Miami!

Many big companies have their main offices here. Some well-known ones include Travelport, The Home Depot, Genuine Parts Company, Papa John's, RaceTrac, and The Weather Channel.

Besides offices, Cumberland also has lots of shops. The main shopping spot is Cumberland Mall.

In 2017, the Atlanta Braves baseball team opened their new home, Truist Park, in Cumberland. Right next to the ballpark is The Battery Atlanta. This is a fun area with shops, restaurants, and entertainment, all connected by a bridge to the ballpark.
