History of Cumberland Mall
Cumberland Mall was a very important mall when it opened. It was the first mall in Georgia to have four main department stores. It was also only the second mall like this in the entire Southeastern United States. Crow Carter & Company developed the mall. The first big stores were Rich's, Davison's, Sears, and JCPenney.
For more than ten years, Cumberland Mall was one of the top malls in the area. But then, Town Center Mall opened in Kennesaw in 1986. This meant Cumberland Mall faced more competition. To stay popular, the mall had a big makeover in 1989. Many of its original features were changed. Some older restaurants like Magic Pan and McDonald's left. However, a new food court was added, which was a popular new feature.
More big changes happened in the early 2000s. In 2003, Macy's (which used to be Davison's) closed its store. This led to a huge plan to update the mall. The old Macy's building was torn down. In its place, a new mall entrance was built. This new area also included an open-air section with popular restaurants. These restaurants included Buffalo Wild Wings, Maggiano's Little Italy, The Cheesecake Factory, and P.F. Chang's China Bistro.
The JCPenney store also closed. A new Costco was built where JCPenney used to be. The inside of the mall was completely updated. It got new skylights and a bigger food court. These changes were finished in early 2007. They helped the mall stay competitive.
In 2018, Sears announced it would be closing. It finally closed in November 2018. After Sears closed, Costco and Macy's were the main stores left. In 2020, new stores opened in the former Sears building. Dick's Sporting Goods and Golf Galaxy opened on the upper level. Planet Fitness also opened on September 1, 2020.
Cumberland Mall is also connected to the Cobb Galleria Centre. A special walkway goes over Cobb Parkway to connect the two places.
