Cumrew is a small village and civil parish in north-east Cumbria, England. It is about 7 miles (11 km) south of Brampton and 13 miles (21 km) east of Carlisle. In 2011, the population of the civil parish was 131 people.

The Village of Cumrew

Cumrew is made up of two parts: Cumrew Inside and Cumrew Outside. Together, these areas cover about 2,686 acres (1,087 hectares). The parish shares its borders with nearby places like Croglin, Cumwhitton, Carlatton, and Castle Carrock.

The village has 33 households, and most of them are permanent homes. There are not many businesses in Cumrew. Most of them are farms, such as Rising Sun, Helme, and Gateshaw Mill. There is also a company called Cleanroom Supplies Ltd.

History of Cumrew

Long ago, people thought there might have been a large old building, perhaps a castle, near the church in Cumrew. They saw outlines in a field that looked like the remains of something big. This was possibly Dunwalloght Castle. However, when people looked more closely in 1832, they did not find any proof of a castle foundation. So, the idea of a castle there remains a mystery.

On top of a hill called Cardunnock, there is a large pile of stones known as a cairn. Building this pile of stones would have taken a lot of hard work. People believe it might be where an ancient British chief was buried long ago. They think the chief might have been laid to rest with his war axe and flint-headed spear. These burial sites on mountain tops show how important these leaders were to their people.

St Mary's Church

The church in Cumrew is called St Mary's Church. It was built in 1890 on a site where an older church likely stood in medieval times. George Dale Oliver designed the church.

St Mary's is a very small church. It has a small tower on its west side that holds two bells. On April 1, 1957, the church became a Grade II listed building. This means it is a special building that is protected because of its historical or architectural importance.

Population Changes in Cumrew

The number of people living in Cumrew went down for many years between 1831 and 1891. The population grew a little in 1901, but then it decreased again between 1921 and 1951.

Two big events likely caused this population drop. The first was World War I, which lasted from 1914 to 1918. Many young men from the village who worked on farms were called to fight. Sadly, many of them did not return home. This led to fewer people living in many small English villages.

Soon after, World War II started in 1939. Again, many men were called to serve their country. Like before, many did not come back. This also caused the number of people in rural areas to decline. Since 1961, the population of Cumrew has slowly been increasing.

They worked on farms in and around Cumrew, such as Rising Sun, Helme Farm, and Cateshaw Mill. Many farms in the area also hired these agricultural workers.

How Cumrew is Governed

Cumrew is part of a joint parish council with the nearby village of Carlatton, called Carlatton and Cumrew Parish Council. A parish council is the lowest level of local government. It helps manage local services and represents the community.

Cumrew is also part of the City of Carlisle district. This district council handles services like waste collection and planning. Cumrew is in the Wetheral electoral ward, which elects two councillors to the City of Carlisle council. These councillors represent the local people.

For county-level decisions, Cumrew is in the Wetheral Division. This division elects one councillor to the Cumbria County Council. This council manages larger services like schools and roads.

Finally, for national elections, the village of Cumrew is in the Penrith and The Border constituency. This is the area that elects one Member of Parliament (MP) to the UK Parliament in London.
