Castle Carrock is a small village in the beautiful county of Cumbria, England. It's located about 3 miles south of Brampton. This friendly village is known for its lovely walks and a popular music festival.
In 2011, about 328 people lived in Castle Carrock. The village has a local pub called The Duke of Cumberland. It also has a primary school for younger students. Castle Carrock is surrounded by other areas like Cumrew, Carlatton, and Hayton.

Discovering Castle Carrock's Past
Castle Carrock has a long and interesting history. Its name likely comes from an old castle that once stood here.
Early Days and Important Families
The first important person linked to Castle Carrock was Eustace de Vallibus. He received land here from his relative, Hugh de Vallibus. Hugh was given a large area called the Barony of Gilsland by King Henry II.
Eustace's family eventually took "Castle-Carrock" as their last name. They probably built a castle in the area. Over time, the land was passed down through generations. Eventually, it became part of the lands owned by the Earls of Carlisle.
Ancient Discoveries in the Area
On top of the nearby hills, you can find two large piles of stones called cairns. One of these is very big and is known as Hespeck Raise.
In 1775, near Gelt bridge, another stone pile was found. When farmers moved the stones, they discovered a cistvaen. This is a simple stone coffin. Inside it was a human skeleton.
Later, around 1870, two farmers found another cistvaen near Greenwell. This one also held a human skeleton. Next to it were an ancient pot (urn) and a flint tool. These items might have belonged to a warrior chief from over 2,000 years ago!

Above the village, you'll find the Castle Carrock reservoir. This large reservoir was built in 1907. Its main purpose is to supply clean drinking water to the city of Carlisle.

Castle Carrock is famous for its annual music festival, "Music on the Marr." People call it 'Cumbria's Most Friendly Music Festival'. It happens every year at the end of July.
