A Look Back: Cómbita's History
Long before the Spanish arrived, the area of Cómbita was home to the Muisca. They were an organized group of people living in what was called the Muisca Confederation. The main leader of the northern Muisca was known as the zaque of Hunza, which is now the city of Tunja. The local leader, or cacique, of Cómbita was loyal to this zaque.
In the Chibcha language, which the Muisca spoke, the name Cómbita has a special meaning. It can mean "Hand of the jaguar and wheel of life." Another meaning is "Force of the summit."
The modern town of Cómbita was officially founded in the year 1586.
