Early Life and Growing Up
Bash was born as Dana Ruth Schwartz in Manhattan, which is a busy part of New York City. Her family was Jewish, and learning was very important in her home. Her mother, Frances Schwartz, wrote books and taught Jewish studies. Her father, Stuart Schwartz, was an ABC News producer who helped lead the popular morning show Good Morning America.
Her family history contains incredible stories of bravery and survival. Her grandmother, Teri Vidor Weinman, belonged to a family of Hungarian Jews. In 1941, during a dark time in world history, her grandmother escaped from danger and moved safely to the United States.
When she was a child, her family moved to Teaneck, New Jersey. Later, they lived in Washington, D.C., before settling down in Montvale, New Jersey. Bash went to school at Pascack Hills High School in New Jersey. She loved finding out how rules, leaders, and communities work together.
College Years and Learning News
After high school, Bash attended George Washington University in the nation's capital. She studied political communications, which teaches people how leaders talk to the public. She worked very hard and graduated with honors, known as cum laude. While she was still a college student, she took practice jobs called internships at NBC, CBS, and CNN. Bash soon stepped in front of the television cameras. She started reporting directly on lawmakers in the United States Senate. She walked the halls of Congress to interview lawmakers right after they voted. Because she did such careful work, she became the Chief Congressional Correspondent for CNN. In that same year, she published an American history book titled America's Deadliest Election about the 1872 Louisiana gubernatorial election.

Bash has been married two times. From 1998 to 2007, she was married to Jeremy Bash. Jeremy Bash later worked as a top leader for the CIA and the Department of Defense under President Barack Obama.
In 2008, she married fellow news anchor John King. They welcomed a son together in 2011, and they later ended their marriage in 2012. Both still work together on the same television network to share important news stories with viewers all around the world.
