Early Life and Learning
Dave McMurray grew up in Detroit, Michigan. His family was working-class. He got a special scholarship. This allowed him to attend Cranbrook Schools for high school. Cranbrook is in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
After high school, he went to Wayne State University. He studied Urban Studies and Psychology. Before becoming a full-time musician, he worked helping people with mental health.
Music Career Highlights
Dave McMurray started his music journey early. His first big tour was with the blues legend Albert King. When he returned, he formed his own band called 'Midnight Sky'. He also joined an experimental jazz group, Griot Galaxy.
McMurray became a member of the pop-rock band Was (Not Was). He played on all their albums. He also became a very busy "session musician." This means he played instruments on recordings for many other artists.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he played on albums for rock and blues stars. These included The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. His first solo album, The Secret Life, came out in 1989. Later, he released The David McMurray Show in 1996.
In 2018, McMurray joined Blue Note Records. This is a famous jazz label. He released Music Is Life with them. This album had his own songs and some well-known cover songs.
From 2008 to 2016, McMurray was the saxophonist for Kid Rock's band. This band was called Twisted Brown Trucker. In 2019, he played with Bob Weir at a festival. This was the first time he played music by the Grateful Dead.
He then recorded Grateful Deadication. This album featured jazz versions of Grateful Dead songs. It included guest artists like Bob Weir. Blue Note released this album in July 2021.
McMurray released a follow-up album in May 2023. It was called Grateful Deadication 2. This album featured his Detroit band. It also had special guests like Jamey Johnson and Bob James.
