David Hemblen (born September 16, 1941 – died November 16, 2020) was an actor from England. He often worked in Canadian movies, TV shows, and plays. He grew up in Toronto, Ontario.
David Hemblen was well-known for playing George in the TV series La Femme Nikita. He was also the Customs inspector in Atom Egoyan's movie Exotica. Kids might know him best as Lord Dread/Lyman Taggert in Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future. He also played Detective Dick Hargrove in T. and T. and Inspector Winterguild in TekWar. He was also famous for his role as Johnathan Doors in Earth: Final Conflict. Many people remember his voice acting as Magneto in the X-Men cartoon from 1992 to 1997.
Early Life and Learning
David Hemblen was born in London, England. He grew up in Toronto, Ontario. There, he studied classic subjects before getting into acting. He earned a master's degree in English. He was also working on a higher degree about medieval studies.
During a university play rehearsal, Clifford Williams from the Royal Shakespeare Company noticed him. David was then offered a chance to act for a season at Toronto's Royal Alexandra Theatre. In the 1960s, David Hemblen was involved in politics. He was a member of the Young Socialists group.
His Acting Career
David Hemblen started his acting journey in plays during the 1960s. He acted in or directed over 70 plays at big Canadian theaters. These included the Stratford Festival and the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake. He was nominated for a Dora Award. This was for his great acting as Dr. Astrov in the play Uncle Vanya at Toronto's Tarragon Theater.
Movies and TV Shows
David Hemblen was a main actor in the TV series Earth: Final Conflict. He played Jonathan Doors, which is one of his most famous roles. He was a main character for the first two seasons. He continued as a recurring character in the third season. His character was written out in the fourth season.
He also had regular roles in other TV shows. These included Lewis Hewitt in A Nero Wolfe Mystery and George in La Femme Nikita.
David Hemblen was a talented voice actor. He voiced Magneto in the popular X-Men: The Animated Series. He was also the voice of the Night Master on Yin Yang Yo!. He voiced the Vaultkeeper in Tales from the Cryptkeeper. He played Lord Dread/Lyman Taggart on Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future. He also voiced Asmodeus Poisonteeth in the Redwall cartoon.
In movies, David Hemblen played a tough henchman named Jones in Short Circuit 2 (1988). He was Reverend Buckley in Where the Spirit Lives (1989). He also appeared as Christopher Newport in Pocahontas: The Legend (1999). He worked with director Atom Egoyan in several films. These include Speaking Parts, The Sweet Hereafter (1997), Where the Truth Lies (2005), and Family Viewing (1987). For Family Viewing, he was nominated for a Genie Award.
In 1975, he starred in a children's TV show called The Adventures of Timothy Pilgrim.
His Personal Life
David Hemblen lived in Toronto for most of the year. Every winter, he would visit his second home in the south of France. He had one daughter, Kate, who is also an actress.
