Dawsonville is a city in Georgia, United States. It is the main town, or county seat, of Dawson County. In 2020, about 3,720 people lived there. Dawsonville is part of the larger Atlanta metropolitan area. The current mayor is John Walden, who started his job in December 2023.

History of Dawsonville
Dawsonville started in 1857. It became the main town for the new Dawson County. The town was officially recognized in 1859 and became a city in 1952. Both the city and the county are named after William Crosby Dawson, who was a U.S. Senator.
Geography and Location
Dawsonville is located at 34°25′N 84°7′W. The city covers about 21.3 square kilometers (8.2 square miles). Only a small part of this area, about 0.05 square kilometers (0.02 square miles), is water.
Major Roads and Nearby Towns
The city is where several state roads meet: SR 9, SR 53, and SR 136.
- SR 9 goes northeast about 14 miles to Dahlonega. It also goes south about 17 miles to Cumming.
- SR 53 goes southeast about 6 miles to U.S. Route 19. It also goes west about 24 miles to Jasper.
- SR 136 also leads to Jasper, taking a longer route of about 29 miles. This route goes through the southern part of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Natural Wonders Nearby
Amicalola Falls is a beautiful waterfall located about 15 miles north of Dawsonville. It is known as one of the seven natural wonders of Georgia.

Fun Activities and Sports
Auto Racing History
Dawsonville is famous in the world of auto racing. Many racing skills developed here because people used to drive fast to transport goods in the area. Each October, Dawsonville celebrates this history with the "Mountain Moonshine Festival."
Dawsonville is also the hometown of famous NASCAR drivers.
- Bill Elliott won the Winston Cup championship in 1988. He was added to the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2015. People call him "Awesome Bill from Dawsonville."
- His son, Chase Elliott, won the NASCAR Cup Championship in 2020. He still races in the NASCAR Cup Series.
The old city hall building now hosts the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame. When Bill or Chase Elliott win a big race, a special siren goes off at the Dawsonville Pool Room near the city square. This lets everyone in town know about the victory!
