DeTour Village is a small village located in Chippewa County, in the state of Michigan, USA. In 2020, about 263 people lived there.
This village is found at the very eastern tip of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It sits in Detour Township. DeTour Village is an important spot for boats. It marks the turning point for ships moving between the St. Mary's River, Lake Huron, and the Straits of Mackinac.
Drummond Island is a large island in the St. Mary's River. It is only about one mile away from DeTour Village. The DeTour Reef Light, a famous lighthouse, is also very close by.

History of DeTour Village
Early Settlements and Fur Trade
DeTour Village was first a settlement of the Ojibwe people. Over time, it became a key place for the fur trade. This trade involved exchanging goods for animal furs. Many Métis lived here. Métis are people with mixed Indigenous and European (often French) heritage.
Later, many Métis residents were seen as French-Canadian. This change happened as the area developed.
How DeTour Village Got Its Name
The area was first set up in 1850. It was called Warren Township. This name honored Ebenezer Warren, who was the first postmaster. An old map from 1848 shows the settlement was called Warrenville.
The name changed to Detour in 1856. This happened when Henry A. Williams became the new postmaster. The village officially became a village in 1899. The spelling was changed to "DeTour" in 1953. Then, in 1961, the post office was renamed "DeTour Village."
Roads and Connections
M-134 is a main road that goes through DeTour Village. This road connects to I-75, which is about 43 miles (69 km) to the west. M-134 also links to M-129, about 25 miles (40 km) to the west. M-129 goes north for 37 miles (60 km) to Sault Ste. Marie.
M-134 also continues east. It leads to Drummond Island by way of the Drummond Island Ferry. This ferry helps people travel to and from the island.
