Deborah Nowalski Kader (born on August 6, 1980), known as Debi Nova, is a talented singer and songwriter from Costa Rica. Many people consider her the most successful artist from Costa Rica ever!

Debi started her music journey as a singer for the band Gandhi. They were a very popular rock band in Costa Rica. Later, she became a backing vocalist for famous artists like Sérgio Mendes and Ricky Martin. This helped her start her international music career. She has worked with many other stars, including the Black Eyed Peas, Mark Ronson, and Sean Paul. She also wrote songs for groups like Orishas and RBD.

In 2004, Debi released her first solo song, "One Rhythm." It became a number one hit on Billboard's US Dance Club Songs chart! This song was also featured in the EA FIFA 2005 video game. Since then, Debi has worked with many other artists, such as Franco de Vita, Ce'Cile, Fonseca, and Pedro Capó.

Debi has released five albums. Three of her albums received nominations for Latin Grammy Awards. She even won a Latin Grammy for "Best Engineered Album" for her album '3:33'. In 2020, she made history by becoming the first Costa Rican artist to be nominated for a Grammy Award for her album '3:33'. She is also the most streamed Costa Rican artist on Spotify!

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Debi Nova was born on August 6, 1980, in Escazú, San José, Costa Rica. Her family has roots in Poland, as her grandparents moved to Costa Rica from Poland in the 1930s.

Debi started playing the piano when she was just four years old. She studied classical music for ten years. By the time she was 14, she was already writing her own songs and playing many different instruments. When she was 17, she moved to Los Angeles after signing her first record deal. She later graduated from the Los Angeles College of Music.

Debi Nova's Music Career

Debi Nova began her career singing backup for the band Gandhi. With them, she even got to open a show for the famous rock band Deep Purple. She also worked with Ricky Martin, recording a Spanish version of his song "I Don't Care." Debi also sang background vocals for Britney Spears on her song "Lace and Leather" from the album Circus.

In 2004, her song "One Rhythm" became a number one hit on the US Dance Club Songs chart. A special remix of this song was included in the EA Sports video game FIFA Football 2005.

Debi appeared on the TV show Dancing with the Stars in 2010. She also took part in the Colgate MaxWhite "Charging Up The Music" campaign.

Her first studio album, Luna Nueva, came out in 2010. It featured her popular song "Drummer Boy".

In 2011, MTV Latin America gave her the MTV Chiuku prize. This was for her work with the United Nations campaign "UNITE to end violence against women." In 2012, she became an ambassador for YUNGA (Youth and United Nations Global Alliance).

Debi was part of a group called "LR1" (Latinos are One) for a while. Their song "Maña y Corazón" was released in 2011 to celebrate Latino Heritage Month.

Debi Nova was chosen as the official voice for the 2013 Central American Games in San José, Costa Rica. Her song "Arriba Arriba" was the theme. She also spoke at the TEDx Joven Pura Vida conference. There, she shared her story and encouraged young people to follow their dreams.

In 2013, she released an EP called Un Dia a la Vez. This project was entirely in Spanish. It was a preview for her next album, "SOY," which came out in 2014. The album "SOY" had four singles: "Un Día A La Vez," "Amor," "Emergencia," and "Cupido." The song "Cupido" had two versions, one with Sie7e and another with Ce'Cile.

SOY was nominated for "Best New Vocal Pop Album" at the 2014 Latin Grammy Awards.

In 2016, Debi won the first season of Colombia's version of Dancing with the Stars.

Her third album, Gran Ciudad, was released in 2017 by Sony Music Latin. This album was nominated for "Best Singer-Songwriter Album" at the 2017 Latin Grammys. She performed her song "No Nos Sobran Los Domingos" at the pre-Grammy show.

In May 2020, Debi released her album '3:33'. This album earned her two nominations at the 2020 Latin Grammys: "Best Tropical Song" for "Quédate" (with Pedro Capó) and "Best Singer-Songwriter Album" for '3:33'. The album '3:33' also won the award for "Best Engineered Album." Debi performed the song "3:33" at the main ceremony. On November 24, 2020, it was announced that '3:33' was nominated for "Best Latin Pop or Urban Album" at the 63rd Grammy Awards. This was her first Grammy nomination!
