Starting Out in the 1980s

Franco De Vita was born in Venezuela. His parents were from Italy. When he was 3, his family moved to Rome, Italy. They moved back to Venezuela when he was 13.

Because he grew up in Rome, Franco first learned to speak Italian. He learned Spanish when he returned to Venezuela. He also studied piano at a university.

In 1982, Franco started a music group called Icaro. They released one album. Two years later, in 1984, he released his first album as a solo artist. It was simply called Franco De Vita. This album had three hit songs: "Somos Tres," "No Hay Cielo," and "Un Buen Perdedor."

His 1986 album, Fantasía, also had many popular songs. One song, "Sólo Importas Tú," was used as the theme song for a TV show called La Dama De Rosa. Franco would appear at the end of each episode, playing the song on the piano.

To reach more people around the world, Franco De Vita joined CBS Records. His 1988 album, Al Norte del Sur, showed his thoughtful pop style. Songs like "Te Amo" and "Louis" were popular. The music video for "Louis" was considered very modern for its time.
