Franco De Vita's Music Journey
Early Life and First Steps in Music
Franco De Vita was one of four children. His parents were immigrants from Italy. When he was three years old, his family moved to Rome, Italy. They moved back to Venezuela when he was 13. Because he grew up in Rome, Italian was his first language. He learned Spanish only after returning to Venezuela. He later studied piano at a university.
In 1982, Franco De Vita started a music group called Icaro. They released one album in Venezuela. Two years later, in 1984, he released his first album as a solo artist, simply called Franco De Vita. This album had three popular Spanish songs: "Somos Tres," "No Hay Cielo," and "Un Buen Perdedor."
His 1986 album, Fantasía, also had many hit songs, including the title track and "Aquí Estás Otra Vez." The song "Sólo Importas Tú" from this album was used as the main song for a Spanish TV show called La Dama De Rosa. Franco De Vita even appeared at the end of each episode, playing the song on the piano.
Becoming an International Star
To reach more people around the world, Franco De Vita joined CBS Records International for his 1988 album, Al Norte del Sur. This album showed his style of pop music, which often had messages about society. Two important songs from this album were "Te Amo" and "Louis." The song "Louis" was about a taxi driver who dreamed of being like The Beatles. Its music video was considered very advanced for its time.
In 1990, Franco De Vita released the album Extranjero. This album featured the song "No Basta," which was number one on the United States Latin charts for four weeks. It also won an MTV Video Music Award.
Music in the 1990s and 2000s
Franco De Vita continued to release many albums. These included a live album called En Vivo Marzo 16 in 1992, Voces a mi Alrededor in 1993, and Fuera de Este Mundo in 1996, which had an acoustic sound. In 1999, he released Nada Es Igual, which had a world-beat style.
He left Sony for his 2002 album, Segundas partes también son buenas, but returned to the label the next year.
His 2004 album, Stop, was very successful. It reached the Top 10 in many Latin American countries and on the United States Latin charts. This album had popular songs like "Tú De Qué Vas" and "Si La Ves," which was a song he made with the pop group Sin Bandera. In the same year, he toured big music venues in the United States with Ricardo Montaner, another Venezuelan songwriter. Franco De Vita has also recorded songs in Italian and Portuguese. He has written songs for other famous singers like Ricky Martin and Chayanne.
In 2005, a special version of Stop was released, called Stop + Algo Más. It included new versions of songs and live recordings. It also had "No Sé Lo Que Me Das," which was Franco De Vita's first song recorded in English. The next year, in 2006, he released Mil y Una Historias En Vivo, a live album with two discs. It also had four new studio songs, including collaborations with Alejandro Fernández and Diego El Cigala. A DVD version was released at the same time.
In 2007, Franco De Vita worked with the reggaeton duo Wisin & Yandel on a song called "Oye Donde Esta El Amor." This song used parts of his earlier song "Donde Esta El Amor." They also released a new version of "Un Buen Perdedor," which reached number two on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart. In 2008, he re-recorded "Que No Muera La Esperanza" with Wisin & Yandel. He also released a new studio album called Simplemente La Verdad. That year, he received the ASCAP Latin Heritage Award.
