Ricardo Montaner's Life
Early Years and First Songs
Ricardo Montaner was born in Valentín Alsina, Argentina. His birth name was Héctor Eduardo Reglero Montaner. When he was six years old, his family moved to Venezuela. As a young boy, he sang in a church choir in the city of Maracaibo.
His first song performed internationally was "Canta, viejo, canta" at a festival in Peru. After this, he chose his stage name, Ricardo Montaner. He used his mother's family name for this.
In 1976, he recorded his first song called Mares. He also took part in the Ancon Festival in Peru. His song "Murallas" helped him become more popular there.
In 1983, Ricardo released his first album, Cada Día. It wasn't a huge hit in Venezuela at first. But it was the start of his career. By 1987, he became very popular in Venezuela. This happened with his songs "Yo Que Te Amé" and "Vamos a Dejarlo". These songs were from his album Ricardo Montaner.
Becoming a Star
The next year, he released Ricardo Montaner 2. This album had hit songs like "Tan Enamorados" and "A Donde Va el Amor". Around the same time, he acted in a popular TV show called a telenovela, named Niña Bonita. This helped his songs become known across Latin America. He even won four platinum albums in Argentina alone. (A platinum album means it sold a lot of copies!)
His next two albums, Un Toque de Misterio and En el Último Lugar del Mundo, were big hits in Mexico. They also did well in Central and South America. Songs like "La Cima del Cielo", "Me Va a Extrañar", "Déjame Llorar", and "Será" became very popular.
By 1992, Ricardo wanted to reach the Spanish Caribbean with his music. He released Los Hijos del Sol. This album included songs like "Castillo Azul" and "Piel Adentro". That same year, he sang a duet with Michelle. It was the Latin American version of "A Whole New World" from the movie Aladdin, called "Un Mundo Ideal".
Also in 1992, he performed a live concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City. More than 16,000 people came to watch him. He also released "La pequeña Venecia". In this song, he showed his deep love for Venezuela, which he calls his country. In 1993, Montaner was nominated for three Lo Nuestro Awards. These included Pop Artist of the Year.
Ricardo Montaner writes most of his own songs. He has also worked with other great songwriters. In 1994, he wrote and produced all the songs on his album Una Mañana y un Camino. This album became popular years later. In 1995, he released Viene del Alma, which had an Italian pop music style. Also in 1995, he and Yolandita Monge set a Guinness World Record. They performed three concerts in different cities in Puerto Rico on the same day! They used helicopters to travel quickly between stages.
New Music Styles
In 1997, Montaner started working with a new record company, Warner Music. His album Es Así helped him gain attention in Spanish-speaking parts of the United States. It allowed him to tour in over 17 countries in Latin America. Songs like "La Mujer de Mi Vida" and "Es Así" became very popular.
In 1999, Montaner recorded an album of his greatest hits. He worked with the London Metropolitan Orchestra for this. It was a huge success, selling over 1 million copies. In 2001, he released Sueño Repetido. This album included the bolero-style song "Bésame". This song became very successful worldwide. He continued to work with other famous musicians, which helped his career grow even more.
In 2002, he released Suma (with bolero songs) and in 2003, Prohibido Olvidar (with pop ballads). These albums sold well. The song "Si Tuviera Que Elegir" from Suma was written for his daughter. In 2003, he broke a record for the most concerts on the same tour. He sold out 18 concerts at the theater of Bellas Artes in Puerto Rico. This broke his old record of 12 concerts.
In 2004, he made another album with the London Metropolitan Orchestra. It was called Con La London Metropolitan Orchestra Vol. 2. It had his latest hit songs and two new songs. In 2005, Montaner released Todo y Nada. This album featured "Cuando a mi Lado Estas" and "Nada". He was nominated for a Latin Grammys award for this album. Some of his non-album songs were also used as theme songs for Mexican TV shows.

A special version of the "Viajero Frecuente" album included a duet with Spanish musician Alejandro Sanz.

This award honors his long and successful career.
