About Coastal Tarweed
Coastal tarweed is an annual herb. This means it grows from a seed, flowers, produces new seeds, and then dies all within one year. It can grow quite tall, up to 100 cm (about 40 inches).
Its Unique Flowers
This plant produces many bright yellow flower heads. These "flower heads" are actually made up of many tiny flowers grouped together. They have two main types of small flowers:
- Disc florets: These are the small, tube-shaped flowers found in the center of the flower head.
- Ray florets: These are the strap-shaped flowers that look like petals around the edge of the flower head.
Where Coastal Tarweed Grows
Deinandra corymbosa is native to California. You can find it mostly in the Coast Ranges along the coast. Its range stretches from Humboldt County in the north down to Santa Barbara County in the south.
Sometimes, small groups of these plants are found further inland. For example, they have been seen in Shasta and Kern Counties. One interesting spot is in an urban area within the city of Mariposa.
