The Democratic Republic of Georgia (DRG) was Georgia's first modern republic. It existed from 1918 to 1921. Its capital city was Tbilisi, and its official language was Georgian.

This republic was created on May 26, 1918. This happened when the Transcaucasian Democratic Federative Republic broke apart. The new country was led by the Social Democratic Menshevik party. The young nation faced many challenges, both inside and outside its borders. It could not stop an invasion by the Russian Red Army. The republic fell in early 1921 and became part of the Soviet Union.

What Was the Democratic Republic of Georgia?

The Democratic Republic of Georgia was a country in the Caucasus region. It was formed after the Russian Empire fell apart. This republic was an important step for Georgia. It was the first time Georgia had been an independent country in modern history.

How Georgia Became Independent

Georgia declared its independence on May 26, 1918. This happened after the Transcaucasian Democratic Federative Republic dissolved. That federation was a short-lived union of Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. When it broke up, each country went its own way.

The new Georgian republic was led by the Social Democratic Menshevik party. This was a political group that believed in social democracy. They wanted to create a fair society for everyone.

Challenges and the Fall of the Republic

The Democratic Republic of Georgia faced many difficulties. It was a new country in a tough neighborhood. It had problems with its neighbors and internal conflicts.

In February 1921, the Russian Red Army invaded Georgia. The young Georgian army fought bravely. However, they were outnumbered and outgunned. The capital city, Tbilisi, was captured on February 25, 1921.

This invasion led to the end of the Democratic Republic of Georgia. It was then taken over by the Soviet Union. Georgia became a Soviet republic. This event is remembered as a sad day in Georgian history.
