The Des Moines Art Center is an exciting art museum in Des Moines, Iowa. It has a huge collection of paintings, sculpture, modern art, and art made with different materials, called mixed media. The museum first opened its doors in 1948.

History of the Art Center

The story of the Art Center began way back in 1916. That's when the Des Moines Association of Fine Arts started showing art in a gallery space. This first gallery was at the Public Library of Des Moines downtown. They held several art shows each year. They also bought artworks to build their own collection.

In 1938, the art collection moved to a new building. Then, in 1943, a big gift from James D. Edmundson helped them plan for a permanent museum building. By 1945, the Des Moines Association of Fine Arts became the Des Moines Art Center we know today.

The perfect spot for the new museum was chosen in Greenwood Park. Building started in 1945, and the museum officially opened in 1948. Later, more parts were added to the museum in 1968 and 1985.

In 2009, the Art Center also started looking after the Pappajohn Sculpture Park. This cool outdoor park is located downtown and features many amazing sculptures.
