Desmond Lamont Bishop (born July 24, 1984) is a former American professional football player. He played as a linebacker, a position where players stop the opposing team. Desmond Bishop played college football for the University of California, Berkeley. The Green Bay Packers picked him in the 2007 NFL draft. He later won Super Bowl XLV with the Packers. He also played for the Minnesota Vikings and San Francisco 49ers.

Early Life and High School Football

Desmond Bishop grew up in Fairfield, California. He went to Fairfield High School. While there, he was named Second-team All-State. He also played in a special All-Star Game for top high school players in 2002. Besides football, Desmond also played basketball in high school.

College Football Journey

Desmond Bishop played college football at two different schools. He started at a junior college before moving to a bigger university.

Playing at City College of San Francisco

From 2003 to 2004, Bishop attended City College of San Francisco. He was a key player for two years. In 2003, his team won the national championship with a perfect 13–0 record. Experts ranked him as one of the best community college players in the country. He was also named California's Junior College Defensive Player of the Year in 2004. He made 118 tackles in 10 games that season.

Playing at the University of California

After junior college, Bishop transferred to the University of California. He quickly became a starter.

2005 Season Highlights

In 2005, Bishop immediately became a starting middle linebacker for the California Golden Bears. He played in all 12 games. He led his team with 89 tackles. He also forced one fumble and broke up two passes. He had a strong debut with seven solo tackles in his first game.

2006 Season Highlights

The 2006 season was another great year for Bishop. He started all 13 games. He was named a Third-team All-American. He also earned First-team All-Pac-10 honors. He led the entire conference in tackles with 126. This was the second year in a row he led his team in tackles. He also had three sacks, 15 tackles for loss, three interceptions, and two forced fumbles. He had at least seven tackles in 11 of his 13 games.

Professional Football Career

Desmond Bishop played for several teams in the NFL.

Green Bay Packers Years

The Green Bay Packers drafted Bishop in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL draft. He played ten games in his first year, making 10 tackles. In his second season, he started his first NFL game. He had 12 tackles and a sack in that game.

In 2010, Bishop became a full-time starter after another player got injured. He played very well, making 103 tackles, 3 sacks, and 1 interception that he returned for a touchdown. He was a key player when the Packers won Super Bowl XLV. In that game, he recovered a very important fumble, helping his team win 31–25 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

After his great 2010 season, the Packers signed Bishop to a new contract in 2011. However, in 2012, he got a serious hamstring injury during a preseason game. This injury required surgery. The Packers placed him on injured reserve and later released him in 2013.

Minnesota Vikings

In June 2013, Bishop signed a one-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings. Unfortunately, he tore a ligament in his right knee (ACL) in October. This injury ended his season.

Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers

Bishop signed with the Arizona Cardinals in August 2014. He was released, then re-signed, and released again later that year. He then signed with the San Francisco 49ers in December 2014. He re-signed with the 49ers in 2015 but was placed on injured reserve due to another injury.

Washington Redskins

In January 2016, Bishop signed a contract with the Washington Redskins. He was released by the team in May of that year.

Coaching After Playing

After his playing career, Desmond Bishop became a football coach. In 2017, he returned to the California Golden Bears as an assistant coach. He helped with the team's defense.

Desmond Bishop's Family and Life

Desmond Bishop's father, Dennis, also played college football and professionally. Desmond's younger brother, Devin, followed in his footsteps. Devin also played linebacker at City College of San Francisco and then at the University of California.

In high school, Desmond played against Jarrett Bush, who later became his teammate on the Green Bay Packers.
