Desmond Lamont Bishop, born on July 24, 1984, is a former American football player. He was a talented linebacker who played in the NFL. Bishop is best known for winning Super Bowl XLV with the Green Bay Packers. He also played for the Minnesota Vikings and San Francisco 49ers.

Growing Up: Desmond Bishop's Early Days

Desmond Bishop went to Fairfield High School in Fairfield, California. While there, he was a great athlete. He earned Second-team All-State honors for his football skills. In 2002, as a senior, he played in the California North-South Shrine All-Star Game. Bishop also played basketball in high school.

College Football Journey

Desmond Bishop played college football at two different schools. He started at City College of San Francisco. Later, he transferred to the University of California, Berkeley.

City College of San Francisco: A Strong Start

Bishop attended City College of San Francisco from 2003 to 2004. He was a key player for two years. In 2003, his team won the national championship. They had a perfect 13–0 record. Experts ranked him as one of the best community college players. He was named California's 2004 Junior College Defensive Player of the Year. Bishop also received First-team JC Gridwire All-American honors. He made 118 tackles in 10 regular games.

University of California: Becoming an All-American

2005 Season: Making an Immediate Impact

When Bishop arrived at the University of California in 2005, he immediately became a starter. He played middle linebacker in all 12 games. He led the team with 89 tackles. He also forced one fumble and broke up two passes. He earned second-team All-Pac-10 honors for his strong performance.

2006 Season: Leading the Conference

In 2006, Bishop started all 13 games. He was named a Third-team All-American. He also made the All-Pac-10 First-team. Bishop led the entire Pac-10 conference in tackles with 126. This was the first time a Cal player had done that since 1993. He also had three sacks and 15 tackles for loss. Bishop forced two fumbles and recovered two others. He also made three interceptions.

Desmond Bishop was drafted into the NFL in 2007. He played for several teams during his career.

Green Bay Packers: Super Bowl Champion

The Green Bay Packers picked Bishop in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL draft. He was the 192nd player chosen overall.

Early Years with the Packers

In his first season (2007), Bishop played in ten games. He made 10 tackles. In 2008, he made his first career start. He recorded 12 tackles and a sack in that game. He finished the season with 35 tackles.

Becoming a Starter and Winning the Super Bowl

In 2010, the Packers' starting middle linebacker got injured. Bishop stepped up and took his place. He started 12 games and played incredibly well. He finished the season with 103 tackles, 3 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles. He also had an interception that he returned for a touchdown. Bishop was a key player in the Packers' journey to Super Bowl XLV. In the Super Bowl, he recovered a crucial fumble. This play helped the Packers win 31–25 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Later Years with Green Bay

After his amazing 2010 season, the Packers signed Bishop to a new 4-year, $19 million contract. However, in 2012, he suffered a serious hamstring injury during a preseason game. This injury required surgery. The Packers placed him on injured reserve and later released him in 2013.

Minnesota Vikings: A Short Stop

In June 2013, Bishop signed a one-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings. Unfortunately, his season ended early. In October, he tore a ligament in his right knee. He was placed on injured reserve again.

Arizona Cardinals: Brief Stints

Bishop signed with the Arizona Cardinals in August 2014. He was released, then re-signed, and then released again by December of that year.

San Francisco 49ers: Back Home

Bishop signed with the San Francisco 49ers in December 2014. He re-signed with them for another year in March 2015. However, he was placed on injured reserve in August and then released with an injury settlement.

Washington Redskins: Final Team

The Washington Redskins signed Bishop in January 2016. He was released a few months later in May.

Life After Playing: Coaching Career

In 2017, Desmond Bishop returned to the University of California. He worked as an assistant coach for defensive quality control. He also coached at high schools, serving as a defensive coordinator.

Desmond Bishop comes from a family of football players. His father, Dennis, played college football at Illinois. He also played professionally in the USFL. Desmond's younger brother, Devin, also played linebacker at City College of San Francisco and then at Cal.

In high school, Bishop played against Jarrett Bush, who later became his teammate on the Green Bay Packers. A funny moment happened when the Packers visited the White House. Bishop was not allowed in because he forgot his ID on the team plane!
