What the Movie is About
Amarkant Varma (Shah Rukh Khan) works for All India Radio. He is sent to Assam to report on local celebrations. One rainy night, Amar is waiting for a train. He sees a mysterious and beautiful woman (Manisha Koirala).
Amar tries to talk to her, but she ignores him. He keeps trying, and she finally asks for tea. When he returns, she has boarded another train and leaves. Amar is completely charmed by her.
The movie shows Amar's strong feelings for the woman. There's a long dance scene with many dancers on a moving train. It shows the beautiful Indian countryside.
Amar reaches his destination and sees the same woman in Silchar. He tries to speak to her again. But she pretends not to remember him. As part of his job, Amar interviews people about Indian Independence. He also talks to a local leader. This leader believes the government has caused problems in the region. He says his group wants to be free from the government.
Later, Amar talks about his meeting with the woman on the radio. She hears it. He sees her again at a post office. She tells him to leave her alone. But Amar follows her and tells her he loves her. She says she is married, trying to make him leave.
Amar decides to say sorry to her. But she arrives with two men who beat him up. During the beating, Amar learns she lied about being married. He is happy about this, even though he is hurt. He goes to her home, but she has left.
Amar bribes a person at the post office to get her contact details. He learns she is calling Ladakh. Amar travels to Leh. While he is there, he sees the woman again. They board a bus, and military officers question everyone. The woman falsely tells the officers she is traveling with Amar.
The bus breaks down, and passengers have to walk. The woman tells Amar her name is Meghna. Amar keeps trying to be with her. Meghna tells him her path in life makes it hard for them to be together. She shares that she had a very difficult past. She hints that if they were together, she would want many children. A dream-like dance scene in the desert shows their mixed feelings. They spend the night in the desert. In the morning, Amar wakes up and Meghna is gone.
Amar is heartbroken and returns home to Delhi. His family introduces him to Preeti Nair (Preity Zinta) as a possible wife. Preeti tells Amar she was also recently sad in love. Amar then tells her about Meghna. On a date, Amar sees one of Meghna's friends. Amar chases him, but the friend dies after being stopped by police. Because of the serious situation, the police involve a special investigation team.
Back home, Amar agrees to marry Preeti. Wedding plans quickly begin.
To Amar's surprise, Meghna appears at his engagement party. She asks Amar for a place to stay and help finding a job. Amar helps her get a job at his radio office.
Amar still thinks about Meghna. He doesn't know she is in Delhi with a secret group. This group plans dangerous actions in New Delhi during a big parade. She stays at Amar's home to avoid the investigation team. At one point, Meghna feels unsure about harming innocent people. Another group member reminds her of her duty.
Amar becomes a suspect because of the earlier incident. He is questioned by the police. He starts to realize Meghna is involved in something dangerous. Amar finds Meghna and asks her why she is doing these things. She finally tells him her real name is Moina. As a child, she had a very difficult experience. She describes how her village was harmed and her family suffered. She says Amar cannot understand her past. She wants justice through her actions. Amar thinks she is planning something big against the army and the President. Amar is arrested for bothering her.
In another scene, the investigation team gets permission to check all army vehicles for the parade. One of Moina's friends knows about these secret plans.
Moina's friends bribe the police to release Amar. They follow him and attack him again. Amar fights back. He then answers a call from Moina on his attacker's phone. Amar begs Moina to stop her plans and marry him. Moina cries and says it's too late. The scene ends with sounds of gunshots.
But Amar returns home, hurt and bleeding. Preeti tells him his mother is being questioned. She also tells him where Moina is. Preeti asks if he still plans to marry her. Amar says he is the only one who can stop Moina.
Amar is arrested again. He cannot convince the investigation team that he is not working with the group. He says he loves Moina and wants to stop any dangerous actions. The team does not believe him. They give him medicine to make him sleepy for more questions. But Amar fights the medicine. He escapes from the investigation team. He continues to search for Moina.
The next day, Moina is ready for her part in a dangerous plan. A dangerous device is hidden under her dress. Amar finds her. He tells her he loves her forever. He begs her to leave with him. He wants them to start a new life together. He asks her to say she loves him. When she doesn't answer, he keeps asking. He desperately asks her to let him die with her. He pulls her close and keeps asking her to say she loves him. She hugs him. As they hold each other, they cry. The dangerous device Moina carried goes off, and sadly, both Amar and Moina are lost.

Dil Se is said to explore seven different types of love. These types are described in old Arabic stories. They include attraction, strong liking, love, respect, worship, obsession, and finally, death. Shahrukh Khan's character goes through each of these feelings in the movie.
The film shows the strong connection between two people from different backgrounds. One is from the main part of India, and the other is from a more distant area. It explores how their love faces challenges from society and rules.
Some people have said that the songs and beautiful locations in the film helped to make the difficult story easier to watch. They created a magical feeling. The movie's main idea was also inspired by a British film called The French Lieutenant's Woman.
