Dmitri Markov's Early Life and Career
Dmitri Markov started his pole vaulting career representing his home country, Belarus. He was a very talented athlete from a young age. However, he later had some disagreements with the Belarusian Athletics Federation. Because of this, he decided not to compete for Belarus at the 1998 European Championships.
Moving to Australia and New Records
In 1999, Dmitri moved to Australia and became an Australian citizen. This was a big change for him. Soon after, he set a new Oceanian record in pole vault by clearing 5.95 metres or 19 feet 6 inches. He had already jumped 6.00 metres or 19 feet 8 inches in 1998 while still competing for Belarus.
Becoming a World Champion
Dmitri's biggest achievement came in 2001. He won the World Championships by jumping an incredible 6.05 metres or 19 feet 10 inches. This made him only the third person ever to clear such a high bar in pole vaulting! It was a truly amazing feat.

Later, in 2012, he joined the Athletics Australia Hall of Fame.
Dmitri Markov announced his retirement from pole vaulting in early 2007. He had been dealing with ongoing foot injuries, which made it difficult to continue competing at a high level. His very last competition was on March 2, 2007, in Melbourne.
