Early Life and Starting Music
Dominic Howard was born in Stockport, Greater Manchester, England. When he was about 8 years old, his family moved to Teignmouth. This is a small town located in Devon, England.
Discovering Drums
Dominic started playing the drums when he was around 12 years old. He was inspired by a jazz band that performed at his school. This performance made him want to learn how to play drums himself.
Forming a Band
Dominic's first band in school was called Carnage Mayhem. Around this time, he became good friends with Matt Bellamy. Matt played guitar but did not have a steady band. Soon after, Matt was invited to join Dominic's band.
After about two years, many members left the band. Only Dominic and Matt remained. Matt then suggested that they start writing their own songs.
Muse is Born
Later, Chris Wolstenholme joined them. Chris used to play drums in another band called Fixed Penalty. He made a big change and started playing bass guitar for Dominic and Matt.
In early 1994, their new band was formed. It was first called Gothic Plague, then Rocket Baby Dolls. Finally, they chose the name Muse.
Muse: The Band's Journey
Muse released their first album, Showbiz, in 1999. This album showed off Matt Bellamy's high singing voice, called falsetto. It also featured a sad, alternative rock sound.
Growing Their Sound
Their second album, Origin of Symmetry, came out in 2001. With this album, Muse made their music even bigger. They added more instruments and sounds inspired by classical music. They also became known for their exciting live shows.
Absolution, released in 2003, continued to show classical influences. It even featured an orchestra on songs like "Butterflies and Hurricanes". This album was the first of five Muse albums to reach number one in the UK.
International Success
In 2006, Muse released Black Holes and Revelations. This album included electronic and pop sounds. It was influenced by 1980s bands like Depeche Mode. Songs like "Supermassive Black Hole" showed this new style. This album helped Muse become famous all over the world.
Their albums The Resistance (2009) and The 2nd Law (2012) explored ideas about government control and people standing up for themselves. These albums made Muse one of the biggest stadium bands in the world. Their seventh album, Drones (2015), was a concept album about drone warfare. It also brought back a harder rock sound.
Awards and Achievements
Muse has won many awards over the years. They have won two Grammy Awards for Best Rock Album. These were for The Resistance and Drones. They also won two Brit Awards for Best British Live Act. The band has received five MTV Europe Music Awards and eight NME Awards.
In 2012, the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors gave Muse the Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement. Muse has sold more than 20 million albums around the world.
Dominic's Drumming Style
Dominic Howard is left-handed. Because of this, he plays on a drum kit that is set up for left-handed drummers. He also played drums in a supergroup called Vicky Cryer. This band included Jason Hill.
Dominic's Life Outside the Band
In 2004, Dominic's father, William Howard, passed away. This happened shortly after he watched Muse perform at the Glastonbury Festival.
Meeting Inspirations
Dominic once shared that if he could meet any famous person, alive or dead, it would be Jimi Hendrix. He even had a dog named Hendrix!
Honorary Degree
On September 26, 2008, Dominic Howard, along with Matt Bellamy and Chris Wolstenholme, received a special award. They were given an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from the University of Plymouth. This is a high honor given by a university.
