Dominic James Howard (born 7 December 1977) is an English musician. He is best known as the drummer and a co-founder of the famous rock band Muse.

Becoming a Musician

Dominic Howard was born in Stockport, England. When he was about 8 years old, his family moved to Teignmouth, a small town in Devon. He started playing drums when he was around 12. He was inspired by a jazz band he saw perform at his school.

Howard's first band in school was called Carnage Mayhem. Around this time, he became friends with Matt Bellamy. Bellamy played guitar but didn't have a steady band. Soon, Bellamy was invited to join Howard's band.

After a couple of years, many members left the band. Only Howard and Bellamy remained. Bellamy then suggested they start writing their own songs. Later, Chris Wolstenholme, who played drums in another band, joined them. He learned to play bass guitar for the new group.

In early 1994, their band was first called Gothic Plague. Then they changed their name to Rocket Baby Dolls. Finally, they chose the name Muse.

Muse: The Band's Journey

Muse released their first album, Showbiz, in 1999. It showed off Bellamy's high singing voice and a sad, alternative rock sound. Their second album, Origin of Symmetry (2001), made their music even bigger. They added more instruments and sounds inspired by classical music. This album helped them become known for their exciting live shows.

Absolution (2003) continued with classical influences. It even used an orchestra on songs like "Butterflies and Hurricanes". This album was the first of five Muse albums to reach number one in the UK.

Black Holes and Revelations (2006) added electronic and pop sounds. It was influenced by 1980s bands like Depeche Mode. You can hear this in songs like "Supermassive Black Hole". This album helped Muse become famous all over the world.

Their albums The Resistance (2009) and The 2nd Law (2012) explored ideas about government control and people standing up for themselves. These albums made Muse one of the biggest bands playing in stadiums around the world. Their seventh album, Drones (2015), was a concept album. It told a story about drone warfare and went back to a harder rock sound.

Muse has won many awards. These include two Grammy Awards for Best Rock Album for The Resistance and Drones. They also won two Brit Awards for Best British Live Act. They have received five MTV Europe Music Awards and eight NME Awards. In 2012, they got the Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement. Muse has sold over 20 million albums worldwide.

Dominic Howard is left-handed. He plays on a drum kit that is set up for left-handed drummers. He also played drums in a band called Vicky Cryer with Jason Hill.

Dominic's Life Outside Muse

In 2004, Dominic's father, William Howard, passed away. This happened shortly after he watched Muse perform at Glastonbury Festival.

Dominic once answered questions from fans. He said that if he could meet anyone, alive or dead, it would be Jimi Hendrix. He even named his dog Hendrix!

On 26 September 2008, Dominic Howard, along with Matt Bellamy and Chris Wolstenholme, received a special award. They were given an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from the University of Plymouth. This award recognized their achievements in music.
