Dorn is a small village, also called a hamlet, in the Cotswold area of England. It's found in Gloucestershire county, about one mile north of Moreton-in-Marsh.

Discovering Dorn's Past

Dorn has a long and interesting history. It sits on the west side of an ancient Roman road called the Fosse Way. Long ago, there was a small Roman town right here. This Roman settlement was quite important. It was the biggest of five towns that were protected by defenses along the Fosse Way. This road stretched between two major Roman cities: Cirencester and Lincoln.

The Annual Agricultural Show

Today, Dorn is famous for a big event that happens every year. It's called the Moreton and District Agricultural Show. This exciting show takes place on the first Saturday of September. What's cool is that it's held on part of the land where the old Roman town used to be! It's a great way to connect the past with the present.

A High Point on the Railway

If you look near the show ground, you'll see a railway line. This is part of the Cotswold Line, which goes to Worcester. At Dorn, this railway line reaches its highest point between the cities of Oxford and Worcester. This spot is also special for another reason. It's where the land divides the flow of water. Rain that falls on one side will eventually flow into the River Thames, while rain on the other side will flow into the River Severn. This is known as a watershed.

Dorn's Journey Through History

Dorn has been mentioned in important historical documents. For example, it was listed in a special paper from King Edgar in 972. This paper was given to the church in Worcester. Later, in 1086, Dorn was likely part of a larger area called the manor of Blockley. Because of this, Dorn was considered part of Worcestershire county for a long time.

However, things changed over the years. In 1931, Blockley was moved to Gloucestershire county. Then, in 1935, Dorn itself was moved from the Blockley area to a different local area called the civil parish of Batsford. These changes show how places can shift and change their local connections over time.
