Drmngnow is a Yorta Yorta/Kaieltheban man. He uses his music to share his culture and connect with his community. He also helps people learn about Australia's Indigenous history. He even sings in the Yorta Yorta language.
Growing Up and Early Life
Neil Morris grew up in Shepparton, a city in rural Victoria. This area is known as Yorta Yorta Country. His parents loved music, and he heard many different artists. These included Michael Jackson, Guns N' Roses, and Midnight Oil.
As a teenager, he discovered hip-hop. He collected and traded cassette tapes of artists like Ice-T and Wu Tang Clan. He also enjoyed playing basketball with his friends.
In 2001, Neil moved to Melbourne. He studied creative writing and wrote poetry. He also worked in conservation, helping to look after the land. For many years, he traveled and worked in rural areas.
Starting His Music Career
Neil Morris started making his own music in 2005. He began by learning to play the guitar. His first song was "Come as You Are" by Nirvana. He first performed on stage in 2015.
Songs and Working with Others
Drmngnow often works with other artists. In November 2022, he joined other First Nations artists. They created a song called "Forever 15." This song was a tribute to Cassius Turvey. Cassius was a 15-year-old Noongar-Yamatji boy who passed away too soon. The song was played at Cassius's funeral. It was released to the public a few days later.
