The Dwaar Kill is a river in New York State. It is about 17 miles (27 kilometers) long. The Dwaar Kill is a tributary of the Wallkill River. This means it is a smaller river that flows into the Wallkill River.

The Dwaar Kill helps drain a large area of land. This area covers about 28 square miles (73 square kilometers) in Orange and Ulster counties. It is the second-longest river that flows into the Wallkill River. The Shawangunk Kill is the longest.

Like the Wallkill River, the Dwaar Kill flows mostly to the northeast. It eventually reaches the Hudson River through Rondout Creek. Unlike some other rivers in the area, the Dwaar Kill flows mainly through quiet, rural areas.

Where Does the Dwaar Kill Start and End?

The Dwaar Kill begins at a place called Lake Henneside. This lake is in the town of Wallkill. It is located west of a small community called Circleville.

The River's Journey Through Towns

After leaving Lake Henneside, the river flows downhill. It makes a short loop to the south and goes under NY 302. Then, it turns northeast and enters the town of Crawford.

A few miles downstream, the Dwaar Kill flows through a swampy area. It passes under NY 17K near Bullville. It then goes through the Bullville Army Reserve Center.

The river continues its journey northeast. It flows past the old community of Searsville. Early settlers built mills here to use the river's power. About two miles (3.2 kilometers) further, NY 52 crosses the river on a small bridge. The river is too wide here for a simple pipe under the road.

Entering Ulster County

The Dwaar Kill then flows north into Ulster County. It enters the town of Shawangunk. Bruyn Turnpike (Ulster County Route 18) is the first road it crosses in this county.

A short distance north of that crossing, the river turns east. It flows just south of the Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge. Albany Post Road (Ulster County Route 9) crosses the river next. After this, the Dwaar Kill flows past the old Crowell brick works.

Finally, the river turns north again. It flows into the Wallkill River. This meeting point is just south of the former community of Galeville and the Wallkill Correctional Facility.
