East Hanningfield is a small village in the county of Essex, England. It is located southeast of the larger town of Chelmsford. The village is surrounded by other small communities like Bicknacre and West Hanningfield.
In East Hanningfield, you'll find All Saints' Church, a primary school, and a new village hall. There are also a couple of restaurants, 'The Folly Bistro' and 'Vita Bella' Italian restaurant, and a post office. The famous RHS Garden, Hyde Hall is also located nearby.
Village History
The name Hanningfield first appeared in the Domesday Book in 1086. This was a very old survey of England ordered by William the Conqueror. The name is thought to come from the Anglo-Saxons, who lived in England between the 5th and 7th centuries. It likely means "the open country" (feld) "of the people" (inga) "of Hana or Han."
In the 1870s, a book called Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described East Hanningfield. It mentioned that the village had 2,446 acres of land and a population of 453 people living in 94 houses. It also noted that the church was an important part of the village.
All Saints' Church
The All Saints' Church you see today was built in 1885. But it's not the first church to stand in East Hanningfield.
The very first church was built way back in the 7th century. A local Saxon leader became Christian and built this church near his home. This first All Saints' Church lasted for over 1,000 years!
The Great Fire
Sadly, in 1883, a big fire destroyed the old church. People sent a messenger on horseback to get the fire engine from Chelmsford. But by the time it arrived, the church had already burned down. The fire was so hot that the church bells melted! They fell as a shower of molten metal.
Local schoolchildren later collected this melted metal. It was then used to make new bells for the new church. These new bells were made by a famous bell foundry called Mears and Stainbank.
Rebuilding the Church
The insurance money from the fire was £1,000, but this wasn't enough to rebuild the church. The people of East Hanningfield worked together to raise another £2,500. This shows how much the church meant to the community!
A retired wool merchant named Elijah Slater also helped. He donated the land in the center of the village for the new church. In 2012, the church building was given a special Grade II listing. This means it's an important historical building.
You can still visit the graveyard of the first All Saints' Church. It's located in a small wooded area next to East Hanningfield Hall.
