East Tanfield is a small area in North Yorkshire, England. It is known as a civil parish, which is a type of local area. There isn't a modern village here today. In 2013, only about 30 people lived in the parish.

Near a place called Manor Farm, you can find the remains of a deserted medieval village of East Tanfield. This old village is located by the River Ure.

What is East Tanfield?

East Tanfield is a quiet area in the English countryside. It's mostly made up of farms and open land. Even though it's called a "parish," it doesn't have a busy town or many houses. It's a place with a long history, even if it's very small now.

History of East Tanfield

East Tanfield has been around for a very long time. It was even written about in the Domesday Book. This was a huge survey of England ordered by William the Conqueror in 1086. It helped him know who owned what land and how much it was worth.

Back then, East Tanfield was owned by a powerful person called Count Alan of Brittany. During the medieval period (the Middle Ages), it was a busy and successful community. However, it seems that the village became empty in the 1500s. People likely moved away, and the village was left deserted.

How East Tanfield is Governed

For many years, East Tanfield was part of a larger area called Kirklington. It was known as a "township" within that ancient parish.

In 1866, East Tanfield became its own separate civil parish. This meant it had its own local government. Later, in 1974, it became part of the Richmondshire district in North Yorkshire.

Things changed again recently. In 2023, the Richmondshire district was removed. A new, bigger local government, called North Yorkshire Council, took its place.

Sharing a Local Council

Even though East Tanfield is small, it still has a local council. It shares a "grouped parish council" with a much bigger area called West Tanfield. This council is called Tanfield Parish Council. They work together to manage local matters for both areas.
