Eastborough is a small city in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. It's like a special area completely surrounded by the bigger city of Wichita. This makes Eastborough an enclave. In 2020, about 756 people lived in Eastborough.

History of Eastborough

Eastborough was first imagined by a British architect named Burdon Hunter. Building in the Eastborough area started in 1929. However, the discovery of oil nearby caused a delay in its development.

Becoming a City

Sales for Eastborough Village began on April 10, 1929. The plan was for it to become an official city once 30 homes were built. But Eastborough had some disagreements with a nearby area called Woodlawn. They couldn't even agree on the name for the street between them!

Eventually, the two areas decided to work together. Eastborough and Woodlawn officially became the city of Eastborough on June 1, 1937.

The "Speed Trap" Story

Eastborough became known as a "speed trap" because it has a lower speed limit than Wichita, which surrounds it. For example, on Douglas Avenue, the speed limit is 30 miles per hour in Wichita. But in Eastborough, it drops to 20 miles per hour. This is a big difference!

Many people in Eastborough like to walk in the streets. There are no sidewalks in the city, which is why the speed limit is lower. This speed difference became very noticeable after the Towne East Square shopping center was built in 1975. People from Wichita would often drive through Eastborough to get to the mall because a nearby highway, Kellogg, had a lot of traffic.

After 2009, when the Kellogg highway was improved, Douglas Avenue was no longer the main route to Towne East. This helped reduce the traffic through Eastborough.

Changes and Improvements

In 2002, Eastborough gave up some land for the expansion of the Kellogg highway, also known as U.S. Route 54, on its southern side. As part of this project, a wall was built along the southern edge of the city. A new pond and playground were also built and opened in 2003, giving residents a nice place to relax and play.
