Easton is a town in southwestern Washington County, New York. It is located along the county's western border. Easton is part of the Glens Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 2020, the town had a population of 2,279 people. On July 6, 2010, Easton made English its official language.

A Look Back in Time: Easton's History

The town of Easton was created in 1789. It was formed from parts of two other towns: Saratoga and Stillwater. Two important historic buildings in Easton are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the Baker-Merrill House and the DeRidder Homestead. They help us learn about the past.

Easton's western border is the Hudson River. On the other side of the river is Saratoga County. The southern border of Easton touches Rensselaer County.

The United States Census Bureau says that Easton covers a total area of about 63.2 square miles (163.7 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 62.3 square miles (161.3 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.9 square miles (2.4 square kilometers), is water.

NY Route 40 is a main highway that runs north and south through the middle of Easton. NY Route 29 crosses the northern part of the town.

  • Easton – This is a hamlet also located on NY-40, just south of North Easton.
  • Vly Summit – A hamlet mostly at the eastern town line. It is mainly in the town of Cambridge.
  • Greenwich – A village that is partly in Easton and partly in the town of Greenwich.
  • Middle Falls – A hamlet at the northern town line. It is mostly in the Town of Greenwich. The Easton Friends North Meetinghouse is a historic building here.
  • North Easton – A hamlet on NY-40 near the center of the town. Burton Hall is a historic site here.
  • South Easton – A hamlet located east of Barkers Grove.
  • Washington County Fairgrounds – This is a place west of the village of Greenwich.

Natural Features and Landmarks

  • Battenkill – A river that flows into the Hudson River. It marks the northern border of the town.
  • Ensign Brook – A small stream in the southern part of the town. It flows into the Hudson River.
  • Fly Creek – A small stream that flows northward from the eastern town line.
  • Willard Mountain – A small mountain and ski area. It is near the center of the town, just east of Route 40.

Famous People from Easton

  • Martin Harris (1783–1875) was born in Easton. He was an important figure in the early history of the Latter Day Saint movement.
