History of Eddington
The town of Eddington was named after its founder, Jonathan Eddy. He was a brave leader during important wars. First, he was a captain in the French and Indian War. Later, he became a colonel in the American Revolutionary War. He was also the first magistrate (a type of local judge or official) in the area.
Jonathan Eddy and many of the first people who settled in Eddington came from Nova Scotia. They had supported the American rebels against the British during the American Revolution. Most people in Nova Scotia at the time were Loyalists, meaning they stayed loyal to the British.
Eddy tried to get Nova Scotia to join the American Revolution. He led an attack called the Siege of Fort Cumberland. When this attack didn't work, Eddy and others moved to the District of Maine. They were given land grants in what is now Eddington. Later in the war, Eddy successfully defended Maine from a British attack in the Battle of Machias (1777).
