Edward Hogue Funston (born September 16, 1836 – died September 10, 1911) was an important American politician. He served as a U.S. Representative for the state of Kansas.

Who Was Edward H. Funston?

Edward Hogue Funston was born in New Carlisle, Ohio, on September 16, 1836. He went to local schools in New Carlisle. He also studied at Linden Hill Academy and Marietta College.

Early Life and Military Service

Before becoming a politician, Edward Funston worked as a teacher. When the Civil War began in 1861, he joined the Union Army. He served as a lieutenant in the Sixteenth Ohio Battery.

He fought in many important battles along the Mississippi River. He finished his military service in 1865. After the war, in 1867, he moved to a farm in Carlyle, Kansas.

Funston's Political Career in Kansas

Edward Funston began his political career in Kansas. He was a member of the Kansas House of Representatives from 1873 to 1876. In 1875, he became the Speaker of the House. This meant he was in charge of the meetings.

Later, he served in the Kansas Senate from 1880 to 1884. In 1880, he was the Senate President.

Serving in the U.S. Congress

Edward Funston was a member of the Republican Party. He was elected to the United States Congress to fill a spot after another representative passed away. He started serving on March 21, 1884.

He was re-elected several times and served until March 3, 1893. During his time in Congress, he led the Agriculture Committee. This committee worked on laws about farming.

Funston was elected again for the next Congress. He served from March 4, 1893, until August 2, 1894. However, another person, Horace L. Moore, successfully argued that he should have won the election. So, Funston left Congress. After that, he went back to his farm in Kansas.

Edward Funston's Family Life

In 1861, Edward Funston married Ann Eliza Mitchell. She was 18 years old and from Ohio. Ann Eliza was also a cousin of his commander during the Civil War. She was even related to the famous pioneer, Daniel Boone.

Edward and Ann Eliza had several children. Their most famous child was Frederick Funston. Frederick grew up to become a major general in the United States Army. He also received the Medal of Honor, which is a very brave award.

Edward H. Funston passed away at his home in Iola, Kansas, on September 10, 1911. He was buried in the Iola Cemetery.
