Edward Calvert Nixon (born May 3, 1930, died February 27, 2019) was an American businessman. He was the youngest brother of Richard Nixon, who became the President of the United States.
Early Life and Education
Edward was born in Whittier, California. He was the youngest of five sons born to Francis and Hannah Nixon. His older brothers included Richard Nixon, Harold Nixon, and Donald Nixon. Another brother, Arthur, passed away before Edward was born.
Edward Nixon went to Duke University and earned a degree in 1952. He then studied at North Carolina State University, getting another degree in 1954. Both of his degrees were in geology, which is the study of Earth's physical structure and substances.
After college, he joined the United States Navy. He served as a naval aviator, which means he flew planes for the Navy. He also taught others how to fly helicopters. He served in the Navy until 1962.
Edward helped his brother Richard during his campaigns to become president. He was even a co-chairman for Richard's 1972 presidential campaign. Edward was very interested in how people use natural resources around the world. He spent a lot of his career studying global energy use. He also advised companies on these important topics.
Later Life and Work
From 1971 until he passed away, Edward Nixon was the president of a company called Nixon World Enterprises, Inc. This company offered international consulting services from Washington state.
Besides his business work, Edward also taught at the University of Washington. He was an assistant professor of naval science there. He continued to work as a helicopter flight instructor too.
In 2009, Edward Nixon wrote a book about his family. It was called The Nixons: A Family Portrait. He wrote it with Karen L. Olson.
Family Life
Edward Nixon was the last living brother of the five Nixon sons. His brother Richard passed away in 1994.
Edward married Gay Lynne Nixon on June 1, 1957. They lived in a place called Alderwood Manor, Washington, near Seattle. Gay worked as a schoolteacher. They had two daughters named Amelie Peiffer and Elizabeth Matheny. Edward and Gay were married for 56 years. Gay passed away on January 20, 2014.
Edward Nixon died on February 27, 2019. He was 88 years old and passed away at a nursing facility in Bothell, Washington.
