Early Life and Freedom

Edward Ratcliff was born on February 8, 1835. His birthplace was James City County, Virginia. He was born into slavery, which meant he was not free. His life changed when the Union Army arrived. They took control of Yorktown. This important event led to his freedom.

Joining the Union Army

After gaining his freedom, Edward Ratcliff decided to join the Union Army. He became a soldier in Company C. This unit was part of the 38th Regiment U.S. Colored Troops. These regiments were made up of African American soldiers. By September 29, 1864, he had become a First Sergeant.

Bravery at Chaffin's Farm

On September 29, 1864, Edward Ratcliff's unit took part in the Battle of Chaffin's Farm. This battle happened in Virginia. During the fight, Sergeant Ratcliff showed incredible courage. His brave actions helped his unit. For his heroism, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. This special award was given to him six months later, on April 6, 1865.

A Lasting Legacy

Edward Ratcliff continued to serve in the military. He reached the rank of Sergeant Major. This was a very high rank for a soldier. After leaving the army, he lived a full life. Edward Ratcliff passed away on March 10, 1915. He was 80 years old. He was buried in Cheesecake Cemetery. This cemetery is located in Charles Corner, York County, Virginia.
