Edwards is a small town located in St. Lawrence County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 1,015 people lived there. The town was named after Edward McCormack, whose brother helped found it.

Edwards is in the southwestern part of St. Lawrence County, south of the village of Canton. Until January 1, 2013, there was also a village called Edwards within the town. This village later became part of the town itself.

History of Edwards

People started settling in the Edwards area around the time of the War of 1812. The town of Edwards was officially created in 1827. It was formed from a part of the Town of Fowler. Later, in 1852, another piece of land from the Town of Hermon was added to Edwards.

For a long time, the main ways people made a living in Edwards were through farming and mining. However, mining activities have been very small since 1984. The Edwards Town Hall is an important historical building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Geography of Edwards

The town of Edwards covers about 51.3 square miles (133.0 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with about 50.7 square miles (131.4 square kilometers) of land and 0.6 square miles (1.6 square kilometers) of water.

The Oswegatchie River flows through the town, heading northwest. New York State Route 58 is a main road that runs east to west through Edwards.

Communities and Locations in Edwards

The Town of Edwards includes several smaller communities and locations:

  • Creek Settlement – This was a community located southeast of the former Edwards village.
  • Edwards – This is the main community, located in the northeastern part of the town on County Road 24.
  • Pond Settlement – A small community, or hamlet, in the southeastern part of the town, found on County Road 23.
  • South Edwards – This hamlet is also in the southeastern part of the town, near County Road 23 and the Oswegatchie River. It was first settled around 1824 and was once known as "Shawville."
  • Scotch Settlement – This was a community located in the northeastern part of the town.
  • Talcville – A hamlet in the northeastern part of the town, just west of Edwards village. It is named because of the talc mineral deposits found nearby. This community was originally called Freemansville.
