The Elk River is a beautiful stream in Colorado, about 34.2-mile-long (55.0 km). It starts where two smaller rivers, the North Fork Elk River and the Middle Fork Elk River, join together. This meeting point is inside the Routt National Forest, just north of a town called Steamboat Springs.
The Elk River then flows until it meets the Yampa River. The Yampa River is a much bigger river that eventually flows into the Green River, and then into the mighty Colorado River. So, the water from the Elk River travels a long way!
