A Look at Ellen Grove's Past
Ellen Grove started to be divided into blocks for homes around 1959. The name "Ellen Grove" became official in 1962. This happened because a local group, the Ellen Grove Progress Association, worked hard to make it happen. The first blocks of land were quite large, about 2 to 4 acres each. However, they didn't have services like water or electricity at first.
The land originally belonged to a person named R.P. Spinks. He had a daughter named Ellen Dabing. She often played with local Aboriginal children. They would play in a special group of trees near Bullockhead Creek. Because of Ellen, this area became known as "Ellen's Grove."
Over time, parts of a nearby suburb called Carole Park were added to Ellen Grove. This was part of a plan by the Brisbane City Council and Ipswich City Council. Then, in 2009, Ellen Grove grew even more. Its boundaries were extended both north and south. This change made the suburb much bigger and increased its population a lot.
