Elmstead is a quiet residential area in south-east London, England. It is part of the London Borough of Bromley and is located just north-east of Bromley.

A Look Back in Time
What's in a Name?
The name Elmstead was first written down in 1320 as Elmsted. It means 'a place where elm trees grow'. Imagine a long time ago, this area was full of elm trees!
The name was also used for a big house called Elmstead Place and a forest named Elmstead Wood. Later, when the local train station opened, it was named Elmstead Woods.
Exploring Elmstead
Elmstead Wood is a lovely forest where you can go for a walk. You can get into the wood from Elmstead Lane and other spots. It's also part of the Green Chain walk, which connects many green spaces in London. The wood is right next to Sundridge Park Golf Club.
Ancient Fossils at Elmstead Pit
Elmstead Pit is a special place opposite the train station. It is a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest. This means it's important for science! It has amazing fossils from the Eocene epoch, which was about 50 million years ago. These fossils help us learn about Earth's ancient past.

Elmstead shares its borders with several other areas. To the north and north-east is Mottingham. To the east and south-east, you'll find Chislehurst. Bickley is to the south, and Sundridge is to the south-west and west. Finally, Grove Park is to the north-west.
Getting Around Elmstead
Train Services
Elmstead Woods railway station helps people travel around. You can catch Southeastern trains from here. These trains go to central London, stopping at London Charing Cross and London Cannon Street after passing through Lewisham. You can also travel south to Orpington and Sevenoaks.

Only one Transport for London bus service runs through Elmstead.
