Elsenham is a village in the county of Essex in eastern England. It's located in the northwest part of Essex. Elsenham is also a civil parish, which is a local area with its own council. Nearby towns include Bishop's Stortford, Saffron Walden, and Stansted Mountfitchet.

Elsenham's Past: A Look at History

Elsenham is mentioned in a very old book called the Domesday Book. This book was made in 1086 to record who owned land in England. In the book, Elsenham was called Alsenham or Elsenham. At that time, different parts of the village belonged to people named Robert Gernon and John.

The village became well-known for "Elsenham Jam." This jam was made on the estate of Sir Walter Gilbey. It was even advertised with the slogan, "the most expensive jam in the world." Elsenham Jam is no longer made in the village; the company moved to Wales.

In 2008, the government considered Elsenham as a possible location for a new "eco-town." An eco-town is a special type of town designed to be very environmentally friendly, with features like green spaces and energy-efficient homes. This plan would have included about 5,000 new homes.

Elsenham is also a special place for horse racing fans. A famous horse named Golden Miller is buried at Elsenham Stud. Golden Miller was an amazing racehorse who won the Cheltenham Gold Cup five times between 1932 and 1936. He also won the Grand National race in 1934.
