Early Days in Kansas

For thousands of years, the Great Plains of North America were home to nomadic (traveling) Native American tribes. They moved around to hunt and find food.

From the 1500s to the 1700s, France claimed large parts of North America, including the land that is now Kansas. In 1762, after a war, France secretly gave this land to Spain. But in 1802, Spain gave most of it back to France.

Kansas Becomes Part of the United States

In 1803, the United States bought a huge amount of land from France. This was called the Louisiana Purchase. It included most of what is now Kansas. The U.S. paid about 2.83 cents per acre for this vast area.

Later, in 1848, after the Mexican–American War, the U.S. gained more land, including parts of southwest Kansas. In 1854, the Kansas Territory was officially set up. Then, in 1861, Kansas became the 34th U.S. state.

Elyria's Beginnings

McPherson County, where Elyria is located, was created in 1867. Elyria itself was an important stop for shipping goods on the Missouri Pacific Railroad. The town was named after a place called Elyria, Ohio.

Elyria also had its own post office. It was moved there from King City in 1887 and served the community until 1954.
