Emil Hegle Svendsen (born July 12, 1985) is a famous Norwegian biathlete who has now retired. He won many awards, including eight medals at the Winter Olympics. Four of these were gold medals! He also earned 12 gold medals at the Biathlon World Championships.

Emil was part of the Trondhjems Skiskyttere club. This club is located in his hometown of Trondheim, Norway.

Emil Svendsen's Biathlon Career

Starting Out in Biathlon

Emil Svendsen began his journey in the World Cup during the 2005–06 season. Before this, he competed as a junior in the European Cup. In his first World Cup season, Emil finished fifth in three races. He also placed in the top twenty several other times. He ended his first overall season in 22nd place.

Emil was chosen to compete in the 2006 Winter Olympics. He finished sixth in the mass start event. As a junior, Emil won four gold medals at the Junior World Championships. He also earned two bronze medals.

Breakthrough Success

On December 13, 2007, Emil won his first World Cup race in Pokljuka. His biggest success came at the 2008 World Championships. There, he won two individual gold medals! He won both the individual and mass start races. He continued to win more races and podium finishes that season. He ended up finishing third overall in the World Cup.

The 2008-2009 season started very well for Emil. He placed on the podium in his first five races. This helped him take the lead in the overall World Cup standings.

Olympic Medals and World Titles

Emil won a silver medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. This was in the 10 km sprint event. He then went on to win two gold medals. These were in the 20 km individual race and the relay event.

At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Emil won two more gold medals. He won the mass start race. He also won the mixed relay with his teammates Ole Einar Bjørndalen, Tiril Eckhoff, and Tora Berger.

Emil is 185 cm (6 feet 1 inch) tall. He weighs 77 kg (170 pounds). On April 9, 2018, Emil announced that he was retiring from biathlon. This was after the 2017–2018 season.

Emil Svendsen's Personal Life

Emil Svendsen was in a relationship with fellow biathlete Kaja Eckhoff. They met as teenagers at a sports school in Lillehammer. They were together for several years before breaking up in 2011.

Later, he was in a relationship with Samantha Skogrand from 2013 to 2022. They had a son named Magnus in January 2019. In July 2021, they welcomed their daughter, Elsa. The family lived in Oslo. They announced their separation in April 2023.

After retiring from sports in 2018, Emil decided to study business. He also worked as a biathlon expert for a Norwegian TV channel. He coached a youth biathlon team too. As of 2023, he works as a real estate developer.
